With its heart shaped, deep green leaves and tall red stems, you would not think that Japanese Knotweed would be a problem across the UK, but it is. The weed can grow a colossal 20cm a day in the growing season, causing damage to drainage systems and even house foundations. This is a massive amount when comparing it to the growth of other invasive weeds.

Japanese Knotweed’s invasive nature can undermine man-made structures like buildings and hard-standing walls. Any structures that are built on Japanese Knotweed infested land are at a substantial risk of structural damage due to the roots being able to grow a tremendous 3-metres deep.

It is not illegal to have it on your land, but it is illegal for it to spread onto someone else’s under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
