Japanese Knotweed was originally brought over to the UK by the Victorians from Far East Asia. It was brought over as an ornamental plant. It has many nice features to the plant with its heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers. However, don’t be deceived as it is highly invasive and can damage surrounding buildings and structures.

It may have good features to it, but when Japanese Knotweed grows it spreads rapidly unless it is stopped. The foliage grows up to 3 metres in the growing season, taking over your garden. However, the roots also spread out several metres. These roots are strong enough to break through concrete, walls and drains. We have seen many cases where this has happened and caused the property or landowners untold trouble and cost.

Due to its strong root system and fast-growing nature, it can sneak up on many. This is also due to it dying back in the winter months looking as though it is dormant. However, come the spring it reappears with vengeance.
