Japanese Knotweed And Herbicide Treatments

Japanese knotweed is commonly treated with a herbicide programme. To conduct this, it will be over several years and visits, to ensure that the knotweed is fully treated and does not re-emerge after a dormant period. Japanese Knotweed Expert recommend five treatment visits, conducted over one growing season, and then five subsequent inspection visits over the following 2-3 years.

Each herbicide treatment is bespoke and should consider the proximity of the knotweed to waterways or any non-invasive plants or weeds growing in the near vicinity. It should also cater for the size of the infestation and whether there is any other protected wildlife in the area.

The most common herbicide treatment is a glyphosate-based spray – this is sprayed over the plant in its entirety using a knapsack (a weed sprayer). If the plant is well established, with thick and tall shoots  at its roots with the same mixture which can help expedite the decline of the plant.
