Japanese Knotweed Regrowth

Everything you need to know about Japanese Knotweed regrowth:

We treat Japanese knotweed primarily with two chemicals, one is significantly stronger than what is available to the public and the other is not available to members of the public at all. So, when the Japanese knotweed starts to regrow after a whole season of treatments, clients are often surprised by this. But not to worry!

Japanese Knotweed Regrowth and Treatment

Treatments are carried out in August, September and October; the reason for this is that the plant will absorb the maximum amount of herbicide during this time of the year. Additionally, by treating this persistent weed with the correct dosage and at the correct frequency, this elicits the best response in the plant in as much as it dies far more quickly.

However, often the Japanese knotweed can regrow in the following year. Typically, the growth is significantly stunted due to the uptake of the herbicide the previous year.

bad about Japanese Knotweed

Why, is there regrowth when using such strong weedkillers?

Like trees Japanese Knotweed can have far more growth under the ground than above the ground. The rhizomes (roots) can be up to 3m (10ft) deep and grow 7m (23ft) horizontally. Additionally, these are not roots they are rhizomes. This means they can store nutrients and water and keep the plant alive for up to 20 years with no other source of nutrients or water. The plant is truly amazing as it can also grow up to 40mm per day in its peak growing season. As such you can see how such a resilient plant is able to survive the initial treatments aimed to kill it off, especially if it an older mature plant.   This is why our typical management plan last for three years along with additional monitoring to ensure the Japanese knotweed has died. We also include a 10 year insurance backed guarantee on all of our treatment plans to give our clients that added peace of mind!
