Common Areas of Plant Damage
1. Walls and Chimneys
Small trees or saplings growing out of walls or chimney stacks may look unusual, but they’re a red flag. Their roots can force apart mortar joints and brickwork, destabilising the structure and leading to expensive repairs.
2. Roofs and Gutters
Ivy, moss, and self-seeded plants often find their way into gutters and roof tiles. Blocked gutters can cause water to overflow and penetrate walls, while roots can lift and dislodge tiles, creating leaks.
3. Foundations and Pathways
Deep-rooted plants, such as invasive species like Japanese Knotweed, can exploit weaknesses in foundations, drains, and concrete. This not only compromises the structural integrity of buildings but also makes repairs more complex.
4. Underground Services
Roots can invade drainage systems, causing blockages and breakages. Over time, this can result in flooding, dampness, and damage to underground pipework.
