Case Study - Japanese Knotweed in Cheshire

One site where we were eradicating Japanese Knotweed in Cheshire also had a river flowing through it. There are strict guidelines issued by the Environment Agency with regards spraying chemicals near water courses. We are able to fill out all necessary forms including AqHrb01 to get the necessary permission to spray any weeds near a river or stream.

In fact, water is one of the most common ways for Japanese Knotweed to spread in the UK. Therefore early identification and eradication is key to the successful removal of Japanese Knotweed.

Excavation of Japanese Knotweed

On a site where the Japanese Knotweed was found to be growing through hardcore, the client did not have time for us to treat the knotweed where it was situated.

We, therefore, had to dig out the Japanese Knotweed along with 40 tonnes of contaminated soil. This was a relatively small site so we carefully transported it to another part of the site and treatment of the Japanese Knotweed began there. Once the soil has been treated and there is no new growth for two years, we would then recommend that the soil is used in an area away from buildings or services as part of a landscaping scheme. We recommend this because Japanese Knotweed can go into a dormant stage for up to 20 years. By using the soil as a base for other plants, no damage will be caused if Japanese Knotweed reappears and needs to be treated by injection.

For our residential customers we will generally recommend a herbicide treatment as this tends to be the most cost efficient option. The best time to spay the Japanese knotweed is when the plant is actively growing. This is as the herbicide we use is a systemic translocating herbicide. The herbicide treatment is most efficient on a warm, sunny day. We use various chemicals to treat Japanese knotweed, one is significantly stronger than what is available to the general public and one is not available to the public in any form.
